Jesus
as an Advocate
Paul
and others view Jesus as an intercessor :
Romans
8:34
"Who
is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died--more than that, who
was raised to life--is at the right hand of God and is also interceding
for us."
1 John
2:1
"My
dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But
if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our
defense--Jesus Christ, the Righteous One."
1 Timothy
2:5
"For
there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ
Jesus,"

Jesus
teaches:
John
16:26-27
In
that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask
the Father on your behalf. No, the Father himself loves you because
you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.
Jesus
as an Atonement Sacrifice
Paul's
Atonement doctrine:
Romans
3:25
"God
presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his
blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance
he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished--"
Romans
5:6-11
"You
see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ
died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous
man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But
God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still
sinners, Christ died for us.
Since
we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we
be saved from God's wrath through him! For if, when we were God's
enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son,
how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through
his life! Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through
our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation."
Hebrews
10:10
"And
by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the
body of Jesus Christ once for all."
Another's
view:
1 John
4:10
"This
is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his
Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins."
Matthew
9:13
But go and learn what this means: "I desire mercy, not sacrifice".
For I have come not to call the righteous, but sinners.
Mark
12:28-34
"One
of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing
that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, "Of
all the commandments, which is the most important?" "The
most important one," answered Jesus, "is this: `Hear,
O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your
God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your
mind and with all your strength. The second is this: `Love your
neighbor as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than these."
"Well
said, teacher," the man replied. "You are right in saying
that God is one and there is no other but him. To love him with
all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength,
and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all
burnt offerings and sacrifices."
When
Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, he said to him, "You
are not far from the kingdom of God." And from then on no one
dared ask him any more questions."
Eternal Life/Salvation
Paul
teaches:
Romans
6:22-23
"
But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves
to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is
eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God
is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Romans
10:9
"That
if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe
in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."
Romans
10:13
"Everyone
who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."
Jesus
reveals the following:
Matthew
7:21-23
"Not
everyone who says to me, `Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of
heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
Many will say to me on that day, `Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy
in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many
miracles?' Then I will tell them plainly, `I never knew you. Away
from me, you evildoers!'
Mark
10:17-21
"As
Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees
before him. "Good teacher," he asked, "what must
I do to inherit eternal life?"
"Why
do you call me good?" Jesus answered. "No one is good--except
God alone. You know the commandments: `Do not murder, do not commit
adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, do not defraud,
honor your father and mother.' "Teacher," he declared,
"all these I have kept since I was a boy."
Jesus
looked at him and loved him. "One thing you lack," he
said. "Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and
you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."
Luke
10:25-28
On
one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher,"
he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" "What
is written in the Law?" he replied. "How do you read it?"
He
answered: "`Love the Lord your God with all your heart and
with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your
mind'; and, `Love your neighbor as yourself.'
"You
have answered correctly," Jesus replied. "Do this and
you will live."
John
5:24
"I
tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent
me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over
from death to life."
Forgiveness
Paul
teaches:
Ephesians
1:6-8
to
the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in
the One he loves.
In
him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins,
in accordance with the riches of God's grace that he lavished on
us with all wisdom and understanding.
Colossians
1:13-14
For
he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into
the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the
forgiveness of sins.
A small
sample of the teaching of Jesus:
Matthew
6:14-15
"For
if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father
will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins,
your Father will not forgive your sins."
Matthew
12:31-32
"And
so I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but
the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Anyone who
speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone
who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either
in this age or in the age to come."
Status
of Women
Paul's
teaching:
1 Corinthians
11:7
"A
man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory
of God; but the woman is the glory of man."
1 Corinthians
14:34-35
"Women
should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak,
but must be in submission, as the Law says. If they want to inquire
about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for
it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church."
Jesus'
teaching:
Matthew
19:3-6
"Some
Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, "Is it lawful
for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?" "Haven't
you read," he replied, "that at the beginning the Creator
`made them male and female', and said, `For this reason a man will
leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two
will become one flesh' So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore
what God has joined together, let man not separate."
John
4:21-30
"Jesus
declared, "Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will
worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You
Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know,
for salvation is from the Jews. Yet a time is coming and has now
come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit
and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.
God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in
truth."
The
woman said, "I know that Messiah" (called Christ) "is
coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us." Then
Jesus declared, "I who speak to you am he."
Just
then his disciples returned and were surprised to find him talking
with a woman. But no one asked, "What do you want?" or
"Why are you talking with her?"
Then,
leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said
to the people,
"Come,
see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Christ?"
They came out of the town and made their way toward him."
